Heat Network Consultation 13 January 2022

The Department for the Economy has launched a consultation on the regulation of heat networks in NI.

The Department for the Economy (DfE) has launched a consultation on the regulation of heat networks in NI, proposing increased alignment with future UK regulation. This includes mechanisms to support the wider roll out of heat networks along with increased consumer protection for existing and future heat network customers.

A heat network may be a ‘district heating’ system, where a distributed system of insulated pipes takes heat from a central source and delivers it to a number of domestic or non–domestic buildings. Alternatively, it can also be a ‘communal heating’ system where heat is distributed to a number of customers within one building.

We would welcome responses to the consultation from all stakeholders, however, we would particularly encourage you to respond if your organisation currently operates a district or communal heating system in Northern Ireland.

Consultation documents can be found at Heat Networks – building a market framework | Department for the Economy (economy–ni.gov.uk)

All responses should be provided to DfEHeatpolicy@economy-ni.gov.uk. The closing date for responses is 13th February 2022.
